A fall of 20% or more from recent highs.
A bear market is a drop of 20% or more from a recent high in a stock index or an asset, usually lasting months. It comes with pessimism: investors expect prices to keep falling and many sell.
The S&P 500 fell about 34% in a few weeks in early 2020 and about 25% during 2022, both bear markets.
Bear markets are normal and have always ended so far, but they can last a long time. Knowing they happen helps you avoid panic-selling at the worst moment.
