The total value of goods and services a country produces.
Gross domestic product (GDP) is the total value of all goods and services produced in a country over a period. Its growth rate is the main measure of whether an economy is expanding or shrinking.
If GDP grows 2% in a year after inflation, the economy produced 2% more than the year before.
Strong GDP growth usually means rising profits and jobs. Two quarters of falling GDP in a row is a common rule of thumb for a recession.
