What is Rally?

A sustained rise in prices.

A rally is a strong rise in prices over a short period, from a few days to a few weeks. It can happen inside a bull market or as a temporary bounce during a bear market (a 'bear market rally').

Example

After good inflation news, the Nasdaq might jump 5% in three days: a rally.

Why it matters

Not every rally means the bottom is in. Looking at what is driving it (earnings, rates, short covering) helps tell a real turn from a bounce.
