Measures the average change in prices consumers pay over time.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures how the prices of a basket of everyday goods and services change over time: food, rent, transport, clothing, healthcare and more. Its yearly change is the most quoted measure of inflation.
If the CPI rose from 300 to 309 over a year, prices rose about 3%: inflation was 3%.
CPI reports can move markets in minutes, because they shape what central banks do with interest rates. A hotter-than-expected CPI often pushes stocks and bonds down.
