The central bank of the United States.
The Federal Reserve (the Fed) is the central bank of the United States. It sets short-term interest rates, supervises banks and aims for stable prices and maximum employment. Its rate decisions are announced about eight times a year.
When inflation jumped, the Fed raised its key rate from near 0% in early 2022 to above 5% by mid-2023.
Fed decisions move stocks, bonds, the US dollar and crypto worldwide. Markets often react more to what the Fed says about the future than to the decision itself.
