Your first budget in 15 minutes

A budget isn't about cutting everything you enjoy. It's a plan for your money. Here is a simple method to build your first one in about 15 minutes.

Why bother with a budget?

Without a plan, money tends to disappear: a few subscriptions, takeout, small purchases. A budget simply tells you where your money goes and lets you choose where you want it to go instead.

People who budget usually aren't richer at the start. They just stop being surprised at the end of the month.

Step 1: write down your monthly income (2 minutes)

Use what actually lands in your account after taxes: salary, side income, benefits. If your income varies, use a cautious average of the last three months.

Step 2: list your fixed costs (5 minutes)

These are the bills that come every month: rent or mortgage, utilities, phone, internet, insurance, transport, loan payments and subscriptions. Check your bank statement so you don't forget any.

Subscriptions are the easiest place to find savings. Many people pay for services they no longer use.

Step 3: estimate your flexible spending (4 minutes)

Groceries, restaurants, shopping, outings and gifts change from month to month. Look at last month's statement and round up a little: it's better to plan too much than too little.

Step 4: pick a simple rule (2 minutes)

A popular starting point is 50/30/20: about 50% of take-home pay for needs, 30% for wants and 20% for savings and paying down debt. It's a guide, not a law; in expensive cities, needs often take more.

The most important part is to pay yourself first: move your savings amount automatically on payday, before you can spend it.

Step 5: build a safety net, then tackle debt (2 minutes)

Aim first for a small emergency fund so a surprise bill doesn't go on a credit card. Then pay off high-interest debt, like credit cards, as fast as you can: few investments reliably beat the interest you save.

After that, regular investing, even small amounts, lets time and compound growth do the heavy lifting.

Keep it alive

Check your budget once a month for ten minutes and adjust. A budget that changes with your life works better than a perfect one you abandon.
